Safe drinking water…at the turn of a faucet
Because of many caring supporters, we were able to purchase and install a new water filtration system at City of Hope!
How many of us probably don’t think twice about turning on the tap or using our water filter system to get a glass of safe drinking water when we're thirsty…unless for some reason it’s not readily available.
With all the children, staff, mission teams, and patients coming to Amani Medical Center, the amount of safe drinking water needed daily was significant.
Before installing the water filtration system, our drinking water came from a well and our reservoir and had to be purified. Supply and demand were such that the well ran dry within 20 minutes of pumping - and we pumped twice a day. Hudson Mahare, East Africa Regional Director, shares the impact of this improvement:
COST SAVINGS
· Water filtration – manual process
· Time and labor to access water for filtration
· Medical treatment of waterborne diseases, such as typhoid
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
· Improved health and hygiene of our children and staff
· Improved performance with children missing less school because of illness, preventable by accessing safe and pure drinking water
· Testimony to parents, government, and the community of our relentless commitment to pursue excellence in caring for the children, and improving relationships and the image of our institution
· New Water Filtration System does not require replacement filters
The water filtration system is housed in a small, renovated, enclosed building called the “Maji House” (formerly a gazebo). Water is pumped to the Maji House (which sits on top of our largest cistern) and purified by the new system.
We now have a reliable way to purify all our drinking water!
