Seeking Justice For The Vulnerable

“Justice is a central theme in the Bible.”

Isaiah 1:17

Justice is a central theme in the Bible. This verse clearly describes one of God’s priorities for how His people should live their lives. Pursuing justice involves placing God’s value on all people everywhere, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, or social standing. It’s about seeing others as God sees them - people created in His image. Doing justice means restoring broken relationships and loving others well. It requires us to do what is right, speak out against oppression, and stand up for society’s most vulnerable.

HopeCo is an organization committed to pursuing justice. How do we do this?

We defend the oppressed, like Hannah*, who was molested by a neighbor while her grandmother went to the market. Hannah’s mom had few options for her care when she left for work except to leave her with her grandmother. Our staff rescued Hannah and she is now protected and getting the help and professional care she needs. When she came to House of Faraja, she was withdrawn and kept to herself until she realized she was in a safe environment. Now she enjoys interacting and playing with the other girls in the home. Well-liked by her teachers, Hannah shows initiative and is one of the best students in her class. We are seeking justice for her abuser so he will never have the opportunity to hurt another precious girl.

We take up the cause of the fatherless, like eight-year-old David*, who lost his father due to illness. The family suffered greatly. Even though his mother hired out to do farm work, it just wasn’t enough to feed all nine children. Now, at City of Hope, David is healthy, a big fan of soccer, and his favorite activity is making toy cars. David attends church and is reminded that his Heavenly Father sees him, knows him, and loves him.

We plead the case of the widow, like Rachel*, who was struggling to provide for her children alone. She shares, “Thanks to HopeCo, armed with this skill, we can now face the future more confidently.” Nine new young girls recently enrolled in our newest Women’s Empowerment Program in Tanzania where, like Rachel, they are learning practical skills and receiving mentoring and care. Soon they will be able to confidently care for their young families!

May we each allow God to stir our hearts for the poor. Let’s be courageous and show the same compassion that Jesus had for the weak, the suffering, and the lost. And let’s be encouraged that God equips us so that we can serve others and be generous. Together, we can make a difference in His world and for His glory.
